Adding an Appliance to the Enterprise
This section describes how to add a virtual appliance to an existing enterprise. If your enterprise has only a single site and appliance, adding a second appliance to the site provides continuity of service in case the first appliance becomes unavailable for any reason. If your enterprise has multiple sites, you can create new sites while adding appliances.
You can add an appliance to an existing site or to a new site that is created during the appliance's authorization.
To add an appliance to an enterprise, follow the steps in the sections below.

You must authorize the addition of the new appliance from an existing appliance in the enterprise. The new appliance synchronizes its database with the authorizing appliance. Any appliance in the enterprise can be an authorizing appliance.
-
Select an existing appliance to be the authorizing appliance.
-
For the authorizing appliance, go to the Imprivata Appliance Console > Enterprise page > Add Appliance.
An Authorization Request page opens.
-
Enter data for the fields below and then click Save to complete a new authorization request.
Required Fields
- Add appliance to existing site or Create new site — If the new appliance will be a part of an existing site, select the site from the drop-down list. If it is the first appliance in a new site, select Create new site and enter a name for the new site.
-
NOTE: You can create a new Imprivata site only when adding an appliance through an authorization request. After you add an appliance, you cannot reassign it to another site without completely removing the appliance from the enterprise and then reinstalling it. For more information about sites, see The Imprivata Site.
- Select Serial Number of New Appliance — The drop-down list displays the serial numbers of all unused appliances. Select the serial number of the appliance to authorize. If no serial numbers are available, the system notifies you and asks you to upload a new license file. In that case go to Upload a New License File to upload a new license file, and then restart this procedure at the beginning.
- New Appliance Connection Password (and repeat password) — Enter a password to use when you configure the new appliance. This password is only used once. It does not have to be the same as the Administrator or Super Administrator passwords.
Optional Fields
Default values for the optional fields are populated from the authorizing appliance. Information that is entered in the appliance authorization request open as default values in the new appliance’s Appliance Setup Wizard. The information can be changed as needed, except it should not be changed if deploying an appliance on Microsoft Azure.
-
Host and Domain Name
-
Email Forward Address
-
Timezone
-
DNS Servers
-
NTP Servers

Ensure your license includes the appliance to be added. If you do not have a new license file, contact an authorized Imprivata reseller.
When you have the new license file:
-
Save the new license file to any accessible network location.
-
In the Imprivata Admin Console, go to the gear icon > License > Upload a new license.
-
Browse to your new license file and click Upload a new license to upload the license file to the Imprivata enterprise. The old license file is overwritten. The new license takes effect immediately.

Deploy the appliance by following instructions in one of these sections, depending on where you are deploying the appliance:

Run the Appliance Setup Wizard. You will need:
-
The New Appliance Connection Password you created in the authorization request
-
The Administrator password
-
Open a web browser and navigate to https://<appliance_IP_address>:81
-
Click Launch Setup Wizard.

If you did not create a new site in Step 1: Authorize the New Appliance, skip this section.
If you created a new site in that section, then after the appliance restarts after setup, you can configure the new site. To verify that the appliance restarted, log into the Imprivata Admin Console on the new appliance.
If this is the first appliance in a new site, configure the site properties on the Sites page of the Imprivata Admin Console (gear icon > Sites).
To configure the new site:
-
Open the Imprivata Admin Console on any appliance in the enterprise.
-
On the Sites page, select the new site by clicking on its name.
-
Fill in the IP address, failover settings, and other information as described in IP Addresses and Failover.
